Can you get an MRI with a Baha implant?

Recipients of the current generations of Cochlear Nucleus® Implants, Cochlear Baha® Implants and Cochlear Osia® Implants can get an MRI. If your doctor has recommended an MRI scan please review the information below as conditions may differ depending on the type of implant you have.

Can you have an MRI scan with a bone anchored hearing aid?

Stable, secure and safe During the MRI scan, the Neuro Zti implant and magnet remain securely anchored to the bone thanks to the unique way they are attached. Even if the patient has multiple MRI scans, the implant and magnet will stay securely in place.

What happens if someone with a cochlear implant gets an MRI?

The strong magnetic field of an MRI scanner can affect medical implants that contain metal or magnets. When this happens, the implant may move or twist inside of the patient’s body, causing discomfort, pain, or injury.

Is cochlear implant contraindication for MRI?

Objective and importance: Traditionally, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was contraindicated for patients with cochlear implants (CIs), due to concern about device displacement, overheating of the device or tissues, or direct damage to the device electrode.

What implants are MRI safe?

Titanium is a paramagnetic material that is not affected by the magnetic field of MRI. The risk of implant-based complications is very low, and MRI can be safely used in patients with implants. The titanium plates used in the craniofacial area, however, are made of alloys.

Are stainless steel implants MRI safe?

Projectile or missile effect: Ferrous-based materials, nickel alloys and most stainless steel materials are not compatible with the MRI environment. When these materials are exposed to a strong magnetic field, they can be pulled violently toward the magnetic source.

Are MRI magnets always on?

The MRI magnet is ALWAYS on. This means no person is allowed to enter the MRI scan room without clearance and permission from a certified technologist. Metallic objects (such as fingernail clippers, pocket knives and even pens) can lead to serious bodily injury if brought within the magnetic field.

Can you have CT scan with cochlear implant?

X-rays and CT scans are safe for your child and the internal cochlear implant; however, they can damage the external speech processor’s microphone or erase/degrade the programs stored in the processor. You simply need to remove the speech processor when undergoing medical X-rays (i.e. dentist).

What are the MRI safety zones?

At UCSF, each MRI site is divided into 4 safety zones based on the American College of Radiology guidelines:

  • Zone 1: General public area outside the MR environment.
  • Zone 2: Area between Zone 1 (Public Access) and the strictly controlled Zone 2 (Control Room) and Zone 3 (Magnet).
  • Zone 3: Control Room.

Can you have an MRI if you have metal plates and screws?

If you have metal or electronic devices in your body such as artificial joints or heart valves, a pacemaker or rods, plates or screws holding bones in place, be sure to tell the technician. Metal may interfere with the magnetic field used to create an MRI image and can cause a safety hazard.

What is Baha connect MRI?
