A number of case reports show an association of GLP-1 receptor agonists, mainly exenatide, with the development of acute kidney injury. Exenatide is eliminated by renal mechanisms, but liraglutide is not eliminated by renal or hepatic mechanisms.
How many milligrams of exexenatide can you take in a day?
Exenatide (Byetta®) Dosage forms Multi-dose pen 5 mcg dose – 1.2 ml pen with 60 doses 10 mcg dose – 2.4 ml pen with 60 doses Dosing Type 2 diabetes (adults) Starting:5 mcg twice a day Maintenance:5 – 10 mcg twice a day Max:10 mcg twice a day Increase dose at intervals of ≥ 4 weeks
How long does exenatide stay in your system?
Mean half-life of exenatide was 1.5 h in subjects with normal renal function, 2.1 h in patients with mild renal impairment, 3.2 h in patients with moderate renal impairment and 6 h in ESRD patients. The most common treatment-emergent adverse events were vomiting, nausea and headache.
Why is extended-release exenatide not recommended as first-line therapy?
-Extended-release exenatide is not recommended as first-line therapy because of the uncertainty of the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors. -Patients may experience transient (approximately 2 to 4 weeks) elevation in blood sugar when switching from immediate-release exenatide to extended-release.
