In 1944 the island was bought by Sir James Horlick, who developed the world renowned Achamore Gardens around the house. The population of Gigha is approximately 160 and has earned world wide fame since the community acquired the island in March 2002. The Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust now owns the island.

Although you could visit with a car, its small size means it is equally possible to explore by bike (bike hire is available locally) or on foot. There are not many man-made attractions on Gigha but the beautiful natural scenery is the real draw.

Although you are free to walk anywhere on the island, we would ask that you close any gates you open and keep dogs on lead around livestock. We would also ask that you clean up any dog waste. Please leave your surroundings as you found them and clean up any waste or litter.

Caledonian MacBrayne runs a vehicle and passenger ferry to Gigha all year round. The sailing from Tayinloan, Kintyre, is only a 20-minute crossing. Bookings can only be made by commerical vehicles and tickets can only be purchased once on board the ferry.
Does anyone live on Cara island?
Still owned by the MacDonalds of Largie, Cara has been uninhabited since the 1940s when its last resident left, the island no longer able to sustain itself. During the late 1700s, a small community of 22 people lived on the island including 12 children, with three families calling it home.
