There are two giant pandas here at Edinburgh Zoo – Yang Guang and Tian Tian. Yang Guang is our male panda whose name means Sunshine in Mandarin and Tian Tian is our female panda whose name means Sweetie. Both pandas were born in August 2003 and turned 18 years old in 2021.

The National Zoo is one of only three zoos in the U.S. with giant pandas. The other two are Zoo Atlanta and the Memphis Zoo. Who is Hualong the giant panda?
A panda from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) named Hualong. He was selected by our colleagues in Wolong as a good genetic match for Tian Tian. Giant panda cubs are raised by their mothers and it would be rare for them to come into contact with their fathers in the wild.
