Timișoara was named after a fortress: the Hungarian name of the town, Temesvár, refers to a castle (vár) on the river Timiș (Temes). The fortress was first mentioned in the Register of Arad around 1177. In 1241 the city was destroyed during the Mongol invasion of Hungary and Poland, but the walls were rebuilt.

The best way to get to Belgrade from Timisoara is still to catch that only daily direct train; it leaves from Timisoara North train station around 6AM and gets to Belgrade around 9AM. From Belgrade you can certainly catch a bus or train to Zagreb (and probably you can even get one directly to Ljubljana).
