Underground residential distribution wire
Underground residential distribution wire (URD) is a specialty aluminum wire intended for use in residential construction and light to medium duty commercial applications.
How many amps is #4 aluminum good for?
Allowable Ampacities of Insulated Aluminum or CopperClad Aluminum Conductors
| Conductor Size (AWG/KCMIL) | 60°C/140°F TW, UF | 75°C/167°F RHW, THHW, THW, THWN, XHHW, USE, ZW |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 40 | 50 |
| 4 | 55 | 65 |
| 3 | 65 | 75 |
| 2 | 75 | 90 |
What size is 4 0 aluminum wire?
Size AWG: 4/0. Stranding: 18. Conductor Diameter Inches: 0.475. Insulation Thickness Inches: 0.055.
Can URD cable be direct buried?
This underground electrical wire may be used for underground secondary distribution and service entrance applications at 600 volts or less. They may be either directly buried or installed in ducts (lower allowable ampacity), in either wet or dry locations.
Can you direct bury URD wire?
The wire is rated at 600V for underground secondary distribution not exceeding 90˚C. It may be directly buried in earth or installed in duct in both wet or dry locations.
What size wire is needed for a 300 amp service?
For 300 amp, the right wire size is 500 kcmil. 400 amp service requires a wire size of 1,000 kcmil. For 600 amp service, we recommend a wire size of 1,750 kcmil.
What is #2 aluminum wire?
#2 Stranded Aluminum XHHW-2 Wire XHHW-2 are primarily used in air duct, conduit or recognized raceways for services, feeders and branch circuit wiring as specified in the National Electrical Code.
What is the difference between 4 0 and 4 AWG?
This can be very complex but I will try to simplify #4 awg wire is quite a bit smaller than 4/0 wire. The difference is in the size, (circular Mils) and the amount of current that the wire is able to safely carry.
Can you use URD for sub panel?
You’ll need both a neutral and a ground conductior in addition to the phase conductors, so a service entrance cable is unsuited. you can use URD or SER (so long as you have enough conductors) but they will be harder to pull as they are designed for direct burial and so have a thicker sheath.
Does URD need conduit?
URD also called Mobile Home feeder, comes in 3-wire or 4-wire, so it’s an option. It’s legal for direct burial underground, but not for use indoors without conduit as if it was Romex or something.
What kind of wire do you use for URD wire?
Southwire’s Triplex (By-the-Foot) 4/0-4/0-2/0 Black Stranded Al Sweetbriar URD Wire is used for secondary distribution and underground service. It can be used for direct burial or in ducts.
What is a 600V URD cable?
4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 Wake Forest Quadruplex aluminum 600V URD is designed to serve in the secondary distribution circuits for power. In these secondary circuits, the cable is installed in duct or direct burial applications. Due to its versatility, conductor strength, and insulation integrity, it works well for these outdoor applications.
Why choose Southwire’s URD cables?
Southwire’s URD cables may be used for underground secondary distribution and service entrance applications at 600 volts or less. Available in stranded or solid conductors. Learn more. Available in 2 to 14 gauge. Learn more. For residential grounding. Learn more. We offer a wide range of durable liquidtight metallic or non-metallic conduit.
What are underground secondary distribution cables?
Underground Secondary Distribution Cables are twisted assemblies of alloy 1350 aluminum conductors insulated with cross-linked polyethylene. They are used in various underground applications in secondary distribution circuits. Compressed Class B compressed stranded, 1350 series aluminum alloy.
