A treadle lathe allows a craftsman to manually power the cutting tool attached to the lathe. A lathe is used in woodworking and machining to cut or shape cylindrical material. Modern lathes are usually powered by electricity, but some craftsmen prefer to use a treadle lathe.
When was Woodturning invented?
The origin of turning dates to around 1300 B.C. when the Egyptians first developed a two-person lathe. One person would turn the wood work piece with a rope while the other used a sharp tool to cut shapes in the wood. The Romans improved the Egyptian design with the addition of a turning bow.
How do treadles work?
A treadle is operated by pressing down on its pedal with one or both feet, causing a rocking motion. This movement can then be stored as rotational motion via a crankshaft driving a flywheel. Alternatively, energy can be stored in a spring as in the pole lathe.
