What causes a retinal tuft?
They are caused by vitreous opacities, such as epipapillary glial tissue torn from the optic disc, condensations of vitreous collagen, and/or blood. There are no symptoms that can distinguish a PVD alone from a PVD with an associated retinal break.
What is vitreo retinal disease?
Vitreoretinal diseases are our specialty. This term does not describe a single condition, but a group of eye disease that affects the retina at the back of the eye and the vitreous fluid around it. A vitreoretinal disease may occur secondary to diabetes or another health problem.
What is a cystic tuft?
Globules. Cystic retinal tufts are congenital lesions of the peripheral retina. They represent visible sites of abnormal vitreoretinal adhesions, and they therefore are potential causes of retinal tears and detachments following partial or complete PVD.
How urgent is a retinal hole?
Peripheral retinal holes and tears are defects in the retina which may be caused by a number of conditions including PVD, retinal traction, ocular trauma and high myopia (nearsightedness). This is usually an urgent condition requiring treatment as soon as possible.
Can retinal holes heal themselves?
Although some macular holes heal on their own without treatment, in many cases, surgery is necessary to improve vision. The surgery eye doctors use to treat this condition is called a vitrectomy. During a vitrectomy, the vitreous gel is removed to prevent it from pulling on the retina.
Are retinal holes serious?
Retinal holes and tears are small breaks in the retina. The retina is light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Usually holes and tears do not mean you will have serious vision problems right away. However, retinal holes and tears may cause problems if they allow fluid to seep behind the retina.

Can cystic retinal Tufts be treated without a retinal tear?
However, it is important to emphasize that prophylactic treatment of cystic retinal tufts in the absence of a retinal tear would be very ill-advised because several hundred innocence and harmless lesions would have to be treated in order to prevent one tear of the retina.
