Impella® Heart Pumps Impella, the world’s smallest heart pump, is a percutaneous catheter-based technology that provides hemodynamic support to the heart.
What is an Impella device used for?
The Impella heart pump is the world’s smallest heart pump used to help maintain blood flow during high-risk protected percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI).
What does the placement screen show when the Impella 5.0 or Impella LD device is correctly positioned across the aortic valve?
When Impella is correctly positioned you will see both the AO and LV placement signals and a pulsatile motor current, which indicates that the inlet and outlet are in two different pressure sources. If an “Impella Position in Aorta” alarm occurs, the AIC displays a red AO placement signal and a flat motor current.
What is the difference between LVAD and Impella?
LVAD—Used in patients with very low (less than 20%) left ventricular ejection fractions, these devices assist cardiac output in a ventricle that is too sick to provide adequate stroke volume. While some LV function is required, the Impella can nearly entirely compensate for a failed left ventricle in a resting patient.

What is the success rate of LVAD surgery?
Patient Survival The overall survival on LVAD support was 86.1%, 56.0%, and 30.9% at 30 days, 1 year, and 2 years after LVAD implantation, respectively, as shown in Figure 1. A total of 155 of 280 patients (55%) died during the mean support time of 10.4 months (range, 1 day to 3.6 years).
What does the placement screen show when the Impella?
The placement screen has two waveform windows: When the Impella is properly placed, the motor current will be pulsatile, with peaks when the aortic valve is open and there is more energy and flow, and valleys when the aortic valve is closed and there is less energy and flow.
Is Impella a left ventricular assist device?
Impella CP is a microaxial pump left ventricular assist device licensed for use for several hours during high risk percutaneous coronary interventions and up to four days in patients with cardiogenic shock.
