What is a kalk?
Kalk is short for Kalkwasser which is a solution of calcium and alkalinity. In a highly packed reef tank with many lps/sps corals, calcium and alkalinity levels drop over time because those corals are absorbing the calcium out of the water. Therefore, you must replenish the calcium.

Does Kalk raise ALK?

Personally, I would not dose calcium hydroxide unless your tank needs calcium and carbonate. To raise alkalinity alone, you could dose something like Randy Holmes-Farley’s DIY alkalinity supplement.
