What is keyway milling?

Keyway milling is the cutting of a keyway along the axis of the cylindrical surface of shafts or other items. Our portable Keyway milling machines allow us to cut new or re-cut worn keyways in shafts as little as 3/4 inch (19mm) up to 24 inches (610mm) outside diameter.

How are keyways machined?

Keyway cutting with a keyseater machine (or internal keyway slotting machine) removes material through a series of tooth cutting strokes. Some keyseaters only feature a single tooth cutter, while other machines (like the Davis Keyseater) use a multiple tooth cutter to achieve cutting speeds as fast as broaching.

How can a keyway be machined on a shaft?

A method of machining keyways in shafts comprises the steps of aligning a central line of a spindle of a machine tool with a center line of a shaft to be machined, preliminarily machining a keyway in the shaft with keyway mill arranged on the spindle so as to retain a symmetrical allowance for a finishing machining of …

Which milling process is used for generating keyway?

A horizontal milling machine is best for forming flat surfaces, dovetails, keyways, and gears. These machines are best operated through and up milling process whereby the metal is fed into the cutter against its rotating direction.

What is the use of keyway operation in lathe?

In order to perform different operation in a lathe such as different type of turning, chamfering, polishing, grooving, thread cutting, filling, knurling etc. In this project we have to decide that the keyway operation can be done using conventional lathe with help of keyway attachment.

What is a milling attachment?

Punch Milling Attachment (Fig. 16.27 (g)): An important economic attachment for tool manufacture. It enables a considerably simpler, quicker and more accurate work like, manufacture of blanking punches, extended range of application with broaching device (keyways, conic milling device, etc.).

How is a milling cutter attached to an arbor?

All peripheral milling cutters, shell end mills, etc., are mounted on arbors and held in the spindle through a draw bolt arrangement (Refer Fig. 16.26). The cutter is driven through a key fitted on the arbor. One or more arbor supports may be provided to ensure added rigidity.

What are the different types of milling spigots and attachments?

Large shell end mills and face mills are directly mounted on spindle spigots centered on the outside and clamped on the spindle face. Other attachments include universal head milling attachment, rack milling attachment, thread milling attachment, precision measuring instruments and micrometer stops.
