1 January 2012: the 2010-amended STCW Convention became effective for all countries party to the Convention requiring compliance with the new minimum rest hours and record of hours of work. 1 July 2013: since that date, new seafarers-training and competence comply with the 2010-amended STCW Convention.
Why was there a STCW in 2010?
The main purpose of the Convention is to promote safety of life and property at sea and the protection of the marine environment by establishing in common agreement international standards of training, certification and watchkeeping for seafarers.
