Most Scolymia today, at least the very sought after colorful ones come out of Australia. It mostly comes from the permits that are given each season to be able to collect them. Only so many get harvested each year, and of course,the rarest and most colorful ones go for the most money.
Are Scoly corals hard to keep?
Scolymia are easy corals to keep and are best kept on the sandbed. They are fairly slow growing but will accept almost all meaty foods and coral foods designed for lps corals.

How do Scoly corals reproduce?
The most realistic current way of reproducing scoly’s is asexual fragmentation. People have cut them up into quarters and them let them heal into whole scoly’s again. Apparently it takes a long time and they do not regain their perfect shape after the cut.
Are scalymia coral suitable for aquaculture?
Scolymia are not a great candidate for aquaculture at least at the commercial level. There is an inherent risk of cutting any coral but the survival rate of cutting Scolymia is much lower than other corals.

Aquarists can expect most Scolymia varieties to reach about five inches across, although some varieties may only grow to two or three inches. This makes these corals an excellent choice for smaller or even nano tanks. However, many Scolymias inflate to twice their size at night, so it’s important to leave plenty of space for the coral to expand.
